New Delhi: After basking in warm sunshine for days, Delhiites are in for a surprise weather change. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light rain with strong winds for the national capital, bringing back a hint of winter chill.
This sudden shift comes following snowfall in hilly areas like Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, which is set to impact the plains as well.
While the rain might bring back memories of winter, don’t expect a full-blown return of the chilly season. The rain is predicted for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with the possibility of a slight drop in the maximum temperature.
The minimum temperature, however, may dip to a pleasant 9-11 degrees Celsius, offering a welcome respite from the recent heat.
The impending weather system isn’t exclusive to Delhi. The IMD has issued warnings for several states across North India, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. These regions can expect light rain with thunder and lightning, raising the possibility of hailstorm in some areas.
Rain warning in these states
According to the India Meteorological Department, a warning of light rain with thunder and lightning has been issued in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Muzaffarabad and Ladakh till February 20.
There is rain/snow in the Western Himalayan region from the night of 17 to 22 February. There is a possibility of rain over the plains around northwest India during 19-22 February 2024

- Jammu & Kashmir: Brace for light rain/snow with thunder and lightning on February 18th, potentially escalating to heavy rain/snow on the 19th.
- Uttarakhand: Prepare for light to moderate rain/snow with thunder and lightning on February 19th and 20th. Hailstorms are a possibility during this period.
- Punjab: Light to moderate rain with strong winds and lightning is anticipated on February 19th and 20th. Hailstorms are also a possibility on these days.
- Haryana & Chandigarh: Similar to Punjab, these regions can expect light to moderate rain with strong winds and lightning on February 19th and 20th. Be prepared for potential hailstorms on these days.
- Delhi Weather: There is a possibility of light rain in Delhi on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There may be a drop in maximum temperature due to rain. Due to the decrease in temperature, coolness is going to be felt once again. According to the Meteorological Department, a warning has been issued regarding rain and thundershowers in Delhi between February 19 and 21. The minimum temperature of Delhi can be recorded between 9 to 11 degrees Celsius.
