Tatkal Ticket Booking: There is a major update for railway employees. Millions of Indian Railways passengers will be impacted by significant changes to the Tatkal ticket rules effective August 1, 2026. The aim is to enhance transparency and convenience for travelers.
New Token System Implementation
A new token system has been introduced to streamline the Tatkal ticket booking process, reducing overcrowding and confusion at reservation counters. Passengers will now receive a token upon arrival, determining their place in line for ticket booking. This eliminates the need for long queues and overcrowding at the counters.
Previous Rule vs. Current Change
Previously, passengers had to obtain tokens separately and then queue again for booking. This required them to go through the process twice for a single ticket. Under the new system, tokens will be distributed directly at the counter when Tatkal booking commences, saving time and avoiding multiple trips to the counter.
Stricter security measures have been put in place for online Tatkal ticket bookings to prevent bots, fake IDs, and black market activities. Aadhaar-based OTP verification is now mandatory to deter automated software and ticket brokers, ensuring a fair chance for regular passengers to secure Tatkal tickets. When heading to the railway station counter for immediate ticket purchase, ensure you have your Aadhaar card or valid government photo ID. Provide accurate details such as passenger’s name, age, gender, and travel date on the form. Arrive slightly early at the counter to participate in the token process smoothly.

For First AC passengers: 70 kg
For Second AC passengers: 50 kg
For Sleeper and Third AC passengers: 40 kg
For General passengers: 35 kg
What to do if you have more luggage than this
If your luggage is more than the limit, you will have to book it online. Earlier, passengers had to visit the railway station’s parcel office before the train departure to book extra luggage, which used to take both effort and time. But now, for the convenience of passengers, the railways have introduced online luggage booking. For this, you will have to pay 1.5 times the normal luggage charge. But keep in mind, currently, online booking is only available for passengers with a confirmed ticket.
