TA Hike: Central government employees are eagerly anticipating the upcoming rise in their dearness allowance (DA) for July 2026. The government is likely to announce the DA hike within the next ten days, which will not only impact their monthly salary but also their transport allowance. Let’s delve into the expected increase in the transport allowance this time around.
Expected DA Increase
– A potential 3 to 4 percent increase in DA is anticipated.
– If the DA reaches 63 percent, it will reflect a 3 percent increase from the current 60 percent.
– At 64 percent DA, the increase will be 4 percent.
– It is important to note that the DA calculation is based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) provided by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
AICPI-IW and DA Calculation:
The AICPI-IW is a crucial inflation indicator used to compute dearness allowance (DA) for central government employees to counteract inflation. Based on the AICPI-IW data for the 12 months leading to the DA revision in July 2026, a 3-4 percent increase in DA is expected, taking it from 60 percent to 63 or 64 percent.
Transport Allowance Calculation
The transport allowance under the 7th Pay Commission is determined by the employee’s pay level and the city category of their posting. The allowance is higher in category X cities and lower in category Y and Z cities, and includes DA on the base amount. Whenever DA increases, the transport allowance also rises accordingly, providing eligible employees with an additional amount linked to the DA rate, which is set to reach 60 percent in January 2026.
Example Illustration
Employees in Pay Level 9 and above currently receive a basic transport allowance of Rs 7,200 in Class X cities and Rs 3,600 in other designated cities. At the existing 60% DA rate, this allowance is supplemented by Rs 4,320 in Class X cities and Rs 2,160 in other cities.
8th Pay Commission has asked ministries for 3 years of salary and allowance spending, Level 1 to 18. DA, HRA, transport, risk and hardship are each counted separately.

With a potential increase in DA to 63%, the DA-linked additional transport allowance will be Rs 4,536 in Class X cities and Rs 2,268 in other cities, resulting in a monthly benefit rise of Rs 216 and Rs 108 respectively compared to the current rate. If the DA reaches 64%, the additional amount will be Rs 4,608 in Class X cities and Rs 2,304 in other cities, translating to a monthly benefit increase of Rs 288 and Rs 144 respectively.
