Despite performing well in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Champions Trophy, and IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer is not part of the T20 Asia Cup 2025 team. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said it is neither his fault nor Shreyas Iyer’s, because there is no vacant spot. Shreyas Iyer’s father, Santosh Iyer, expressed his disappointment. Former assistant coach Abhishek Nair also questioned the selection and said it seems Shreyas is not being considered for T20 cricket.

Santosh Iyer, while talking to the Times of India, said, “I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing very well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. He has also been brilliant as a captain. He led KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and led Punjab Kings to the final this year.”

Shreyas Iyer’s Father Speaks About His Disappointment

Shreyas Iyer’s father said, “I am not asking to make him the captain of the Indian team, but at least select him in the team. Even if he is dropped from the Indian team, he does not show any resentment. He just says, ‘It’s my fate! You can’t do anything about it.’ He is always calm and composed. He does not blame anyone. Inside, he is naturally disappointed.”

Shreyas Iyer has played 51 T20 Internationals for India. His average is 30.66, and his strike rate is 136.12. He has scored 1,104 runs. His last T20 match was in December 2023 against Australia in Bengaluru, where he scored a match-winning fifty.

After this, he played in the Test team, but got injured and was out of the team. He then missed a Ranji match due to injury, which caused him to lose his central contract. The BCCI felt that he missed the match intentionally.
