Atkinson was part of the England team in the Boxing Day Test played in Melbourne. England won that Test match, which ended in two days, with Atkinson taking two wickets in the first innings and one in the second. Following the Test, Atkinson underwent a scan of his left hamstring, which revealed the injury. Further evaluation of Atkinson’s injury will take place upon his return home.

For now, he has been ruled out of the final Test in Sydney.This was Gus Atkinson’s first Ashes series , in which he took six wickets at an average of 47.33. Atkinson’s absence has exacerbated England’s pace attack. Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse will now shoulder the responsibility of leading the pace attack in the final Test.

Gus Atkinson is the third England fast bowler to be ruled out of the Ashes series due to injury. Mark Wood previously suffered a knee injury and was ruled out of the Ashes after the first Test. Jofra Archer also withdrew from the Ashes after playing the first three Tests due to a side strain.

“The Surrey right-armer left the field after bowling his fifth over of Australia’s second innings during England’s victory at the MCG in the fourth Test. England will not call up a replacement for the fifth Test, which gets under way in Sydney on 4 January”, England cricket board informed in a statement.
