Ration Update: Big news for Ration card holders. Beneficiaries whose ration cards have not been used to collect grains from the Public Distribution System (PDS) shops in the last six months may face suspension. These individuals, known as silent cardholders, will have their cards temporarily deactivated starting from October 1st in Jharkhand. Consequently, they will not be able to avail themselves of grains from that date onwards. The decision was made during a recent meeting of Food Secretaries in Delhi concerning matters related to the Food and Public Distribution Department.

To ensure their ration cards remain active, silent cardholders have until September 21st to collect their allocated rations from PDS shops.

The state government plans to disseminate this information promptly. Silent cardholders are urged to collect their rations by September 21st; failing to do so will lead to the temporary deactivation of their cards from October 1st. The Jharkhand government will issue an official notification regarding this matter to ensure beneficiaries are informed promptly.

Many beneficiaries of ration cards, who seemingly acquired them solely to take advantage of programs like Ayushman Bharat and the Mainiya Samman Yojana, are not utilizing their entitlements from PDS shops. Efforts are underway to identify such cardholders and invalidate their ration cards to eliminate fraudulent beneficiaries.

A gazette notification from the Union Ministry has been released, temporarily deactivating these silent ration cardholders and mandating completion of their e-KYC within the next three months. A previous central notification from July 2025 directed state governments to temporarily deactivate the ration cards of beneficiaries who have not claimed rations from PDS shops for six months.

For those who fail to complete their e-KYC by September 21st, an extension until January 1, 2027, will be granted starting from October 1st. During this period, they must undergo field verification to complete their e-KYC process.
