Ration Card Update: Prices of essentials—including gas cylinders, petrol, and vegetables—have been steadily rising, placing a heavy financial burden on the common man. Managing household expenses has become extremely difficult amidst this inflation, and people are distressed by the soaring costs of daily necessities, especially during the festive season.

Amidst these challenges, the government is attempting to provide some relief. In a recent move, the West Bengal government has stepped forward to help; the administration has announced a 50% subsidy on sugar, flour (atta), and semolina (suji) for approximately two crore families.

The government will distribute these items through the Public Distribution System (PDS). Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently made this announcement.

Two crore families to get flour and sugar at half price

The Chief Minister stated that the government has allocated ₹150 crore for this scheme. Under this initiative, one kilogram of flour will be available for ₹19 and one kilogram of sugar for ₹30. Each family will also receive 500 grams of semolina. He noted that around two crore families would benefit from this measure.

CM Suvendu Adhikari explained that in October, eligible families will receive 1 kg of sugar for ₹30 and 1 kg of flour for ₹19, while 500 grams of semolina will also be provided at a 50% subsidy. The government aims to ensure these items reach beneficiaries before Durga Puja. The tendering process for the procurement of sugar and flour has been completed, while the procurement of semolina is currently underway.

Food prices have been consistently rising for some time now. Everything from onions and tomatoes to various other food items has become pricier. Sugar prices rose by more than 30% over the past few weeks; the government stepped up market inspections and monitoring to curb hoarding and black marketing.
