Railway Rules: Indian Railways is responsible for transporting numerous passengers daily to their destinations, with occasional delays occurring due to adverse weather conditions, technical glitches, or other factors. These delays can lead to extended waiting periods, causing inconvenience for passengers.

What many are unaware of is that special provisions have been put in place by the Railways for passengers of select premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto. In cases where these trains are delayed beyond the specified limit, passengers are offered complimentary meals and additional amenities to ease their discomfort during the wait.

For instance, if a train’s arrival is delayed by two hours or more, passengers traveling on premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto are entitled to receive free meals as per the guidelines of IRCTC, the catering service provider for Indian Railways. These meals may include items like tea, coffee, biscuits, bread and butter, light snacks, and in cases of significant delays, lunch or dinner consisting of rice, lentils, vegetables, roti, or puri, among other essential food items.

It is essential to note that this service is mainly applicable to trains where meals are already included in the ticket fare. Passengers are advised to seek assistance from train personnel or TTEs if needed to avail of these provisions.

Moreover, if a train’s departure is delayed by three hours or more, passengers have the option to claim a full refund by canceling their tickets, in accordance with railway regulations. This refund policy offers relief to passengers who opt not to proceed with their journey due to prolonged delays.

To further enhance passenger comfort and safety during extended delays, railway stations are equipped with waiting rooms, seating arrangements, and essential facilities to ensure that passengers are well accommodated. Security measures, including the deployment of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and other staff, are also in place to maintain a secure environment for travelers.

Indian Railways’ commitment to passenger well-being and safety is evident through these initiatives, aiming to provide a seamless and secure travel experience even in cases of unexpected delays. Travelers on premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or Duronto, facing delays of two hours or more, may be eligible for complimentary meals as part of these efforts.
