Railway Luggage Rules: Big news for railway passengers. Indian Railways is progressing towards enhancing passenger convenience by digitalizing the process of booking luggage during train travel. This change eliminates the need for passengers to physically visit the railway station or parcel office for this purpose.

The new system allows passengers to book their luggage online, starting from July 31st, from the comfort of their homes. This online service will be available alongside ticket booking on the railway’s official portal. Passengers will input travel details, luggage weight, and other necessary information to complete the booking process. A digital receipt will be provided upon successful booking, ensuring transparency and ease for passengers.

Excess baggage will incur additional charges, while the luggage allowance for different classes remains unchanged. Passengers can continue carrying luggage within the prescribed weight limit as before, with charges applying only for luggage exceeding the set weight. It is essential for passengers to declare excess baggage online beforehand.

Know the limitation

The allowance for free carry-on baggage and the maximum weight permitted differ depending on the class you are traveling in. In AC First Class, passengers can bring up to 70 kg of baggage at no extra cost and can reserve a maximum of 150 kg. For First Class and AC Two-Tier, the free baggage allowance is 50 kg, with a maximum limit of 100 kg.

For Sleeper Class, the free baggage allowance stands at 40 kg, with a maximum of 80 kg. In Second Class, passengers are allowed 35 kg of baggage for free and can carry a maximum of 70 kg. Conversely, in AC Three-Tier, AC Three Economy, and AC Chair Car, both the free baggage allowance and the maximum weight permitted are 40 kg.

In a bid to enhance passenger services, Indian Railways has implemented a new token system for immediate ticket booking at reservation counters on West Central Railway (WCR) starting from August 1, 2026. This initiative is designed to reduce lengthy queues, minimize waiting times, and streamline the booking process for greater transparency.

The digitization of luggage booking is expected to reduce congestion at stations and parcel offices, saving time for passengers and streamlining the booking process. This move is seen as a significant step in the Railways’ digital transformation journey, following the success of online services like ticket reservation, meal booking, and complaint redressal. The new system is set to provide a modern and user-friendly experience for millions of rail passengers.
