Post Office New Rules: If you’re planning to send an important document, letter, or parcel through the post office via speed post or registered post, this update is worth knowing about. The Indian Postal Department has rolled out new requirements for booking speed post and registered post. Going forward, simply providing an address won’t cut it anymore—you’ll also need to supply phone numbers for both the sender and the recipient.

The main goal behind this new requirement is to make mail delivery smoother and cut down on fraudulent mailings that use wrong addresses and misleading details. So, if you’re thinking about sending items or documents through the post office, it’s crucial to get familiar with this new rule.

What’s Different for Speed Post and Registry?

When booking speed post and registered post, you’ll now need to provide the sender’s mobile number.

You’ll also have to enter the mobile number of the recipient—the person who’ll be getting the mail.

If you don’t enter a mobile number during booking, the process won’t move forward.

Booking will only be accepted once the mobile number is saved in the post office system.

There’s no way around this by using incorrect or fake mobile numbers.

Why Did the Rule Change?

The Postal Department has run into plenty of delivery problems caused by incomplete addresses or wrong information submitted by senders. Without a mobile phone number on file, postal workers have struggled to reach the intended recipient during delivery when necessary.

Now that mobile numbers are registered in the system, it’ll be much easier to get in touch with both the sender and recipient if needed, and tracking postal information will be simpler too.
