Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin: The Central Government is implementing a special scheme to provide permanent houses to the poor in the country’s rural areas. This scheme is known as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). Under this scheme, the government provides financial assistance of ₹1.30 lakh for the construction of permanent houses. You can apply without delay if you wish to avail yourself of the benefits of this scheme.
It is worth noting that a scheme called ‘Indira Awas Yojana’ was originally launched in 1996 to provide permanent housing for the poor. This scheme underwent revisions in 2014, after which the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin. The scheme aims to provide housing to those without a roof over their heads or forced to live in slums or shanties.
What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin?
Under the PM’s ‘Housing for All’ mission, the minimum area requirement for the house has been increased to 30 square yards, including a kitchen. Millions of people have already received homes. Registration is now underway for the PM Awas Yojana 2.0. Through this scheme, the Central Government transfers funds for house construction directly into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. The primary goal is to provide the poor with clean, hygienic homes equipped with basic amenities.
