PM-SYM: The Narendra Modi administration has introduced numerous initiatives tailored to assist workers in the informal sector, with one being the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) program unveiled in February 2019. Within this scheme, eligible individuals aged between 18 and 40 can enroll by contributing a monthly amount ranging from Rs 55 to Rs 200, based on their age bracket. Upon reaching 60 years old, participants are entitled to a monthly pension of Rs 3,000.

Who can benefit from the scheme?

Individuals employed in the unorganized sector, earning a monthly income of Rs 15,000 or less, and not affiliated with EPFO, ESIC, NPS, or paying income tax, are eligible to join PM-SYM. Those meeting the criteria can enroll in the program.

Equal financial contribution from the government

An exceptional characteristic of PM-SYM is its 50:50 contribution mechanism, where the government matches the participant’s monthly contribution. For instance, if an eligible worker starts contributing Rs 55 monthly, the government also contributes the same amount. Although the monthly premium increases with age, the government’s contribution remains equal each time.

Registration process and statistics

Enrollment for the scheme is facilitated through Common Service Centers, which are spread across the nation. Alternatively, eligible workers can register online at www.maandhan.in. As of July 2026, over 5.4 million people have signed up for the scheme nationwide, with women constituting 53.1% of the participants. The government’s total matching contribution under PM-SYM amounts to Rs 2,011.01 crore. Pension payouts will commence once beneficiaries turn 60, beginning no earlier than February 2039.

Key points of the initiative

Inactive accounts may result from irregular contributions, insufficient funds, bank account changes, or lack of payment awareness. To address this, the government has extended the period for reactivating dormant accounts from one to three years. Additionally, new features like a revival module, claim status, and account particulars have been introduced to enhance the scheme’s effectiveness.
