Paytm Payments Bank Winding Up: If you use the Paytm app or have ever used a savings account, wallet, or FASTag with Paytm Payments Bank, this news is crucial for you. The Delhi High Court has ordered the complete closure of Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL). This has raised several questions in people’s minds. The biggest question is: Will the money deposited in the bank remain safe? Will the Paytm wallet shut down? Will Paytm UPI still work? If these questions are on your mind, there is no need to panic. Let us understand the details.

What verdict did the Delhi High Court deliver?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has informed that the Delhi High Court ordered the closure of Paytm Payments Bank Limited on July 8, 2026. This decision was taken under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, and the Companies Act, 2013. This means the bank will no longer operate as usual; instead, it will be completely shut down through a legal process.

What does “winding up” mean?

Many people mistakenly believe that a bank closure means their money is instantly lost, but that is not the case. “Winding up” refers to the systematic closure of a company or bank in accordance with the law. During this process, the bank accounts for all its assets. Any outstanding debts owed by the bank are paid off, and customer claims are verified. Simultaneously, the process of returning money to customers and other stakeholders is carried out in compliance with regulations. Finally, the bank ceases to exist. Essentially, it is a legal procedure where everything is conducted according to the rules.

Who has been entrusted with the responsibility of closing the bank?

For your information, the Delhi High Court has appointed Girikumar M. Nair, a former Chief General Manager at SBI, as the Official Liquidator. As of July 8, all powers of the Paytm Payments Bank Board of Directors have ceased. Now, all decisions regarding the bank will be made by the Official Liquidator, who will also manage the bank’s assets and oversee the processing of customer claims.

Why did the RBI take such drastic action?

It is worth noting that the RBI does not take such major action against a bank abruptly. Complaints regarding continuous regulatory violations by Paytm Payments Bank had been surfacing for several years. According to the RBI, the bank was failing to comply with numerous rules.

There were serious deficiencies in customer information regulations, and multiple issues were found in the bank’s IT systems. Risk management practices were inadequate. Despite repeated directives to rectify these issues, the expected improvements did not materialise. For all these reasons, the RBI ultimately decided to cancel the bank’s license.

A timeline of events

Action against Paytm Payments Bank unfolded gradually between March 2022 and July 2026. In March 2022, the RBI barred the bank from onboarding new customers and ordered an audit of its IT systems.

Subsequently, in January–February 2024, the RBI imposed the most significant restrictions on the bank. These measures halted the acceptance of new deposits, the addition of funds to wallets, FASTag recharges, the issuance of new credit products, and top-ups. However, customers were permitted to utilise their existing balances. In April 2026, the RBI completely revoked Paytm Payments Bank’s banking license, meaning it could no longer provide banking services. In July 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered the bank’s legal winding up. The process to completely dissolve the bank has now commenced.

Is customers’ money safe?

This is the most critical question. If you have funds in your Paytm Payments Bank account, there is no need to panic. The very purpose of appointing an Official Liquidator is to ensure a proper valuation of the bank’s assets. Additionally, all records must be examined, and customer claims verified. Furthermore, deposited funds are to be refunded in accordance with the regulations; protecting customer interests is a crucial part of this process.

Will the Paytm Wallet shut down?

The RBI had already prohibited loading new funds into wallets in 2024. If there was an existing balance in your wallet, it will now be settled according to the rules of the liquidation process—meaning matters related to the old balance will be resolved through legal procedures.

What will happen to FASTag?

Restrictions had already been imposed on FASTags issued by Paytm Payments Bank; no new FASTags were issued, and the recharge facility was discontinued. Customers were advised to obtain FASTags from other banks. Now, issues related to these will also be addressed during the liquidation process.

Will the Paytm app shut down?

It is worth noting that many people believe the closure of Paytm Payments Bank implies the entire Paytm app will shut down. However, this is not the case. The Paytm app and Paytm Payments Bank are distinct entities. The parent company of the Paytm app is One97 Communications, whereas Paytm Payments Bank is a separate banking unit. Therefore, the bank’s closure does not mean the Paytm app will shut down.

Will Paytm UPI still work?
If you use the Paytm app for UPI payments, the good news is that the service will continue for most users. Paytm now operates its UPI services in collaboration with other partner banks, including major ones such as SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank. If your UPI ID is linked to these partner banks, the service will continue to function as usual.

Who will be affected?

However, customers whose UPI service was directly linked to a Paytm Payments Bank account will no longer be able to conduct UPI transactions through that account. Such customers will need to link their UPI to a different bank account.

Conclusion

According to reports, the Delhi High Court’s order regarding Paytm Payments Bank is part of the bank’s winding-up process. This action follows persistent regulatory lapses and rule violations identified by the RBI. Nevertheless, this does not mean the Paytm app has shut down completely. Paytm’s UPI services continue through partner banks and will remain available to general users. Meanwhile, accounts, wallets, and FASTags linked to Paytm Payments Bank will now be settled in accordance with the law under the supervision of an Official Liquidator.
