Maruti Wagon R Facelift: The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has long held a distinct position in the Indian car market. Its straightforward design, spacious cabin, and ease of driving make it a popular choice among consumers. Now, preparations are underway to launch an updated version of this popular hatchback. The new Maruti Wagon R was recently spotted undergoing testing on Indian roads, heavily camouflaged. While the familiar ‘tall-boy’ design remains intact, the new model is expected to feature updates to its exterior, features, and engine.

The test mule spotted was heavily camouflaged; however, its signature ‘tall-boy’ silhouette remains easily recognisable. Like the current model, it retains a tall body, vertical tail-lamps, and practical proportions.

While the camouflage obscures some details, reports suggest the company may revise the front bumper and grille. This suggests the vehicle will likely arrive as a facelift or major update rather than an entirely new-generation model.

New Z-Series Engine

The most significant change in the new Wagon R concerns its engine. Maruti Suzuki is gradually replacing its older K-Series petrol engines with new Z-Series powertrains. A prime example is the updated Baleno, which features a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E engine. This engine generates 82 PS of power and 112.4 Nm of torque. In the Baleno, the Z12E engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.

Wagon R CNG

A CNG variant of the Wagon R will also be available. Currently, the Wagon R equipped with the 1.0-litre S-CNG powertrain offers a claimed efficiency of 34.05 km/kg. So, a simple engine swap doesn’t necessarily guarantee a big jump in mileage for the CNG model.

Nevertheless, a new Z12E-based CNG setup could offer a fresh option in terms of emissions and powertrain technology. Maruti has already claimed 33.61 km/kg efficiency in the Baleno CNG using this same architecture.

Features and Safety

The new Wagon R may see feature and safety upgrades alongside the engine updates. Depending on the variant, the current model offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted controls, six airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

However, recent spy shots do not confirm exactly which new features the facelift will add. The company may also make minor cabin changes alongside exterior tweaks. On safety, the new Wagon R could also come with more equipment than expected.
