MG Hector Tomahawk EV: India’s electric car market is at an interesting juncture, and activity is set to intensify in the coming weeks. JSW-MG Motor India is gearing up to launch a new electric SUV, and the company appears poised to challenge major players like Mahindra. Named the Hector Tomahawk, this vehicle promises to give rivals stiff competition—not just in aesthetics, but also in range and features. The MG Hector Tomahawk EV is set to enter the Indian market as a new 7-seater electric SUV. With a range exceeding 500 km and premium features, it is expected to rival SUVs like the Mahindra XEV 9S.

Launch

JSW-MG is scheduled to launch the Hector Tomahawk EV on the 26th of this month. Interestingly, the vehicle is believed to be a rebadged version of the Wuling Xingyun, which is sold in the Indonesian market. The company’s strategy is clear: it will launch the fully electric version first, followed by a plug-in hybrid model.

Another highlight of this SUV is its ADAPT platform. The company has designed this platform to accommodate various powertrains, meaning future electric and hybrid vehicles can be developed using this same architecture.

Price and Competition

Now, let’s discuss the price. Reports suggest the SUV could launch in the ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom) range. In this price bracket, it will compete against the Kia Carens Clavis EV, Mahindra XEV 9e, and the upcoming Tata Safari EV. In short, the vehicle is directly targeting the 7-seater electric SUVs currently vying for a foothold in the Indian market.

Engine, Battery, and Range

While MG has not yet officially revealed the car’s features, it is based on the Wuling Starlight 560, making it easy to estimate its specifications. In the global market, its electric version is equipped with a 69.2 kWh LFP battery paired with a front-mounted motor. This motor generates 201 hp of power and 310 Nm of torque, with a claimed range of approximately 530 kilometres.

Meanwhile, for those hesitant to rely solely on an all-electric vehicle, a plug-in hybrid variant is also in the pipeline. It will feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 20.5 kWh battery. While it can cover around 125 kilometres in pure electric mode, its combined range—utilising the petrol engine—could exceed 1,000 kilometres.
