LPG Subsidy: Big news has emerged for customers receiving subsidies on domestic LPG cylinders. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has made biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for subsidised domestic LPG refills, effective from 1 October 2026. This means that, effective next month, customers must complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) to book LPG refills at the subsidised retail selling price. The objective is to ensure that subsidised gas cylinders reach only eligible households.
Customers who have already completed the authentication process do not need to take any further action. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG customers had completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication by September 19. For those who have not yet completed this process, the facility to book subsidised refills will be available once they complete the authentication.
Why was BAA made mandatory?
According to the Ministry of Petroleum, biometric Aadhaar authentication will link every LPG connection to an Aadhaar-verified consumer. This will help prevent the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use and eliminate duplicate connections.

The ministry stated that this measure will make the LPG subsidy delivery system more transparent and ensure that benefits reach the intended consumers.
BAA completed for 27.43 crore customers by September 19
Government data indicates that biometric Aadhaar authentication for 27.43 crore LPG consumers was completed by September 19, 2026. These customers are not required to complete any further procedures in this regard.
How to complete biometric authentication?
When the LPG delivery person arrives at your home to deliver the cylinder, you can immediately complete the authentication process—using either your fingerprint or Face-ID—via their mobile device or a biometric scanner. Alternatively, you can visit the office or showroom of the respective gas agency (such as Indane, HP, or Bharat Gas) and complete the e-KYC process within minutes at the biometric counter available there.
Customers can also perform Aadhaar face authentication themselves from the comfort of their homes using the official mobile apps of the respective oil marketing companies—such as ‘IndianOil ONE’ for Indane, ‘HelloBPCL’ for Bharatgas, and ‘HP PAY’ for HP Gas.
How much does the government spend on LPG subsidies?
The central government provides compensation worth thousands of crores of rupees to state-owned oil companies annually. Domestic LPG is sold at a price lower than the cost of production. According to the ministry, as of September 2026, the subsidy component for a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder is approximately ₹210 per cylinder.
