LPG Rules: Big update for LPG consumers. Biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) has now become compulsory for getting subsidized domestic LPG gas cylinders starting from October 1st. The main concern is whether customers who haven’t completed the Aadhaar authentication will face a discontinuation in their LPG cylinder deliveries. Let’s delve into the specifics.
Will LPG cylinder deliveries stop?
Customers who have not yet finished their biometric Aadhaar authentication will still receive LPG cylinders. They will be required to sign up for this through the digital platforms of their respective Oil Marketing Companies (OMC), like interactive voice response systems (IVRS), WhatsApp chatbots, mobile apps, consumer websites, etc. As per a government announcement, registered consumers will be able to buy LPG in either five- or ten-kilogram cylinders at the prevailing market price, without any subsidy, based on local availability.
How to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication?
This process can also be done during the LPG cylinder delivery. The delivery person can carry out the authentication on the spot using the oil marketing company’s mobile app. Consumers can also accomplish this by visiting their LPG distributor’s shop or by completing the e-KYC process themselves at home using a mobile app. For instance, Indane customers can use IndaneOilOne, Bharat Gas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use the HP Pay app. Video guides on completing the e-KYC process are accessible on the PMUY portal.
What is the aim of authentication?
The aim of the biometric Aadhaar authentication system, according to the government, is to guarantee that genuine and eligible households have access to subsidized domestic LPG cylinders. Connecting each LPG connection to an Aadhaar-authenticated consumer will aid in identifying and eliminating duplicate and ineligible connections. This will also help in preventing the misuse of subsidized domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial purposes and making the subsidy distribution more transparent.
Deadline extensions
Initially, consumers were given a deadline of June 30 to complete the biometric Aadhaar authentication, which was extended multiple times to provide customers with more time. The deadline was pushed to July 31, August 7, August 15, August 23, August 31, September 7, and finally September 14. Oil marketing companies have also launched nationwide awareness campaigns since October 2023, sending out over 120 million SMS and WhatsApp messages.
Subsidy details
LPG is sold for domestic use at a price lower than its actual cost. As stated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the hidden subsidy per 14.2-kilogram cylinder was around Rs 210 in September 2026, rising to Rs 721 per cylinder in June 2026.
