T20 World Cup 2026: scenario for Pakistan to reach the semi-final

Pakistan are alive to fight for another day in the T20 World Cup. They have England to thank for that. England defeated New Zealand by four wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday. Although the Three Lions have already qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, their victory over the Blackcaps has given Pakistan hope. Salman Agha and Co. are still in the race for the semi-finals from Super 8 Group 2. Since Sri Lanka have already been eliminated from the tournament, the Pakistan cricketers had their eyes on the match between England and New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Super Eight campaign is over. Now either they or Pakistan can make the semi-finals. The Blackcaps have a net run rate (NRR) of +1.390. They have three points from three matches. On the other hand, Pakistan have one point. NRR is -0.461 from two matches. The Salmans have one match left on Saturday. If Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in their last match and surpass New Zealand’s NRR, there will be no more obstacles on their way to the semi-finals. Otherwise, New Zealand will be in the last four. If Pakistan bats first, they will have to beat Sri Lanka by 64 runs. If Pakistan bats later, they will have to chase down the total in 13.1 overs to win.

Earlier in the Super Eights, the Pakistan vs New Zealand match was washed out due to rain. As a result, both teams got one point each. New Zealand then beat Sri Lanka by 61 runs to earn two points. On the other hand, Pakistan lost to England by two wickets.

If New Zealand could have beaten England in the Super Eights match on Friday, they would have had five points. That would have ensured a place in the semi-finals. In that case, Pakistan would have had no other chance. England’s win has kept Pakistan completely alive in the semi-finals race. If Pakistan can win their last Super Eight match against Sri Lanka, then they will be level on points with New Zealand. The team with the better net run rate will go through to the knockouts.
