Kolkata Stampede News: 17 people have died following a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in the Chorbagan area of Kolkata. The stampede occurred suddenly on Saturday evening during the Durga Puja festivities. Reports indicate that 17 people have lost their lives, and several others have sustained injuries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, West Bengal Chief Minister [sic] Suvendu Adhikari, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and BJP leader Nitin Navin, among others, have expressed their grief over the incident.
The Prime Minister has announced that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will be provided to the kin of those who lost their lives, while Rs 50,000 will be given to those injured. The West Bengal government has also set up a toll-free helpline number: 18003455678.

What did the Kolkata Police say?
According to the Kolkata Police, a stampede broke out around 7:40 PM on Saturday evening at the exit gate of the Sharada Park (Chorbagan) Durga Puja pandal—located under the jurisdiction of the Girish Park Police Station—due to a massive crowd of visitors amidst rainfall. The pandal has now been closed to the public. All the injured have been safely evacuated and transported to a medical college hospital (MCH) for treatment.

Rahul Gandhi has urged the administration to ensure that all the injured receive prompt and quality medical care and has called for an impartial investigation into the incident.

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that she is deeply shocked by the news of the stampede-like situation at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal.
Police provide details on the incident.
A senior police officer, providing details about the incident, stated, “As soon as the rain began, the crowd waiting outside the ‘pandal’ (tent/marquee) surged forward. In the process, some people fell onto the road, which suddenly triggered a stampede. All the injured have been safely brought out and taken to the hospital.”
