When is Janmashtami 2026? Janmashtami holds special significance in Hinduism and is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country. The birth anniversary of Lord Krishna is celebrated every year on Ashtami (the eighth day) of Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. On this day, huge crowds of devotees gather in Mathura and Vrindavan. According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Krishna to destroy unrighteousness (adharma) and establish righteousness (dharma).
In Hinduism, Lord Krishna is believed to have been born in Mathura at midnight; hence, the festival is celebrated at 12:00 AM. On Janmashtami, devotees observe a fast, adorn the deity, place the idol on a swing (*jhoola*), and offer *Makhan-Mishri* (butter and rock sugar), Panjiri, and other traditional offerings (bhog). The birth celebration is observed with great fanfare in temples and homes, featuring special prayers and *Aarti* at midnight. As often happens, there is considerable confusion regarding the date of Krishna Janmashtami this year as well. Let us clarify the auspicious date for the celebration.
