ITR Refund Status: If you are an income taxpayer who has filed an Income Tax Return (ITR) and is awaiting a tax refund, you do not need to go anywhere else to check its status. The Income Tax Department provides a facility on its e-filing portal where, by logging in, you can find out within minutes whether your return has been processed and whether the refund has been issued or is still being processed. Let us look at the complete procedure.
How to check the refund status
If you have filed your income tax return but haven’t received the refund amount yet, you can check your status via the Income Tax e-filing portal. This is the most secure method and provides your complete tax filing history. Alternatively, you can also check your status through the official TIN-NSDL website.
How to check via the Income Tax e-filing portal
First, visit the Income Tax Department’s official e-filing website.
Next, click on the ‘Login’ button located at the top right of the homepage.
Log in to your account by entering your PAN and password.
Once the dashboard opens, go to the main menu and click on ‘e-File’ > ‘Income Tax Return’ > ‘View Filed Returns’.
A window will open displaying a list of your returns. Select the relevant Assessment Year and click on ‘Details’ to view your refund status.
How the TIN-NSDL website works
This method suits those who have forgotten their account password and want to check the status immediately without logging in.
First, visit the TIN-NSDL website.
Enter your PAN.
Select the Assessment Year.
Enter the captcha code and click ‘Submit’.
The complete status of your income tax return will then be displayed.
How will I know if I’ve received the refund?
When you check your status, you may encounter various terms. If the status shows “Refund Issued,” it means the department has transferred the refund amount to the bank, and your bank account will be credited shortly. If it shows “Refund Failed,” it means the department attempted the transfer, but it was unsuccessful; in this case, you can request a re-issuance of the refund. If the status is “Under Process,” the Income Tax Department is reviewing the matter, and it will issue the refund once the process is complete.
