ITR Refund Delay: Filed Your Return in July? 6 Reasons Your Refund May Be Pending

Income Tax Refund: Upon completion of filing and e-verifying the Income Tax Return (ITR), taxpayers eagerly anticipate their income tax refund. Typically, the Income Tax Department processes refunds within four to five weeks following e-verification. However, delays in refunds may occur due to discrepancies in the return, inaccurate bank account information, or incomplete validations, resulting in a stuck refund. If you filed for a refund before July 31 and it has been processed but not credited to your bank account, consider the following steps:

1. Verify the refund status:

– Log into the Income Tax e-filing portal and navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns.

– Select the assessment year and click on View Details to track the status of your refund.

– Possible updates include Refund Issued, Refund Partially Adjusted, Refund Adjusted, Refund Fully Adjusted, or Refund Failed. Do not assume the money is in your account solely based on a refund processing notification.

2. Address any refund discrepancies:

– If the portal indicates a refund has been issued but not received in your bank account, double-check your bank account details.

– A valid bank account is necessary to receive the income tax refund. Taxpayers can add and validate their bank account through the portal for a smooth refund process.

3. Investigate reasons for refund failure:

– Refunds may fail due to various reasons like unverified bank accounts, name discrepancies, incorrect IFSC codes, or closed bank accounts. Lack of Aadhaar linkage can also lead to refund failures.

4. Validate your bank account information:

– Access the My Bank Account section on the portal to verify the status of your bank account.

– If previous validation attempts failed, re-validate the account by rectifying any errors such as name, PAN-bank link, account number, or inactive bank account closures.

5. Request refund reissue:

– Taxpayers facing refund issues can utilize the refund reissue option. Ensure the refund has failed in the return and the bank account is validated.

– Navigate to Services > Refund Reissue after logging in, create a new request, select the relevant refund record, and validate the bank account. Complete e-verification to receive a transaction ID and confirmation via email and registered mobile number.

6. Check for refund adjustments:

– In some cases, refunds may be adjusted against outstanding taxes or liabilities rather than being directly credited to the bank account. Verify the actual refund status and take necessary steps based on the refund status, bank account validation, and departmental communications. If the status indicates “Refund Failed,” submit a refund issue request post bank account validation.
