Railway Rules Changed: Major news for railway passengers. To manage the large influx of passengers during Diwali and Chhath Puja, the Central Railway has introduced stringent measures at key stations in Mumbai. As part of this, the sale of platform tickets will be completely suspended at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Thane, and Kalyan stations from 5th to 15th November 2026.
Indian Railways has initiated strict protocols to prevent overcrowding at stations and ensure passenger safety throughout the festive period. The Central Railway has made a significant decision specifically aimed at controlling the substantial crowds that typically gather at busy stations in and around Mumbai. Official information confirms that platform tickets will not be issued at these five highly frequented Mumbai stations between 5th and 15th November 2026. During this time, only passengers holding valid train tickets will be permitted on station premises and platforms.
Platform ticket sales will be suspended at the following five stations:
– Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus
– Dadar station
– Lokmanya Tilak Terminus
– Thane station
– Kalyan station
Which passengers and family members will receive special exemptions:
The Railways have clarified that, despite the strict enforcement of safety protocols, individuals assisting passengers under certain special circumstances are exempt from this rule.
– Relatives dropping off or picking up senior citizens.
– Helpers attending to sick passengers on the platform.
– Individuals assisting passengers travelling with young children.
– Family members accompanying women passengers are also exempt from this restriction.
Reason for the ban
Following Diwali and Chhath Puja, trains heading towards North India, Bihar, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh experience heavy congestion. This measure aims to ensure that only ticket-holding passengers access the platforms, thereby preventing stampedes or inconvenience caused by unnecessary crowding. The railway administration has urged passengers to arrive at the station punctually and adhere to the rules to avoid any difficulties.
