New Post Office Speed Post Rules: The reach of postal services continues to expand nationwide. Thanks to low costs and reliable service, people frequently use the post office to send important documents and goods. Amidst this, the Department of Posts has introduced significant changes for customer convenience.
The Department has decided to revise the rules and rates for Speed Post, effective August 1, 2026. Under the new regulations, distinct categories for ‘documents’ and ‘parcels’ have been clearly defined. Additionally, special fast-delivery services—promising delivery within 24 or 48 hours—will be launched for six major cities.
What qualifies as a document and what as a parcel?
To eliminate confusion, the Department of Posts has classified items with no commercial value under the ‘document’ category. Items falling under the document category include:
Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, Voter IDs, driving licenses, and passports; bank passbooks, chequebooks, welcome kits, bank statements, credit or debit cards, and insurance papers; and non-commercial envelopes containing Rakhis (weighing up to 500 grams) for Raksha Bandhan, small packets, and greeting cards.
Items falling under the parcel category include:
Electronic items
Mobile phones
Clothing
Readymade garments, gift items, and other heavy goods
What are the new Speed Post rates?
The Department of Posts has not changed the existing charges for retail customers. However, new rates have been set for bulk customers sending documents. Under the Speed Post service, retail customers will be charged between ₹38 and ₹186, depending on weight and distance. For a packet weighing up to 50 grams, the charge will be ₹38 for local delivery and ₹94 for delivery to any other part of the country.
How rates will be determined:
51g to 250g: ₹118 to ₹154 per article
251g to 500g: ₹140 to ₹186 per article
Express 48 Speed Post charges:
24 Speed Post: ₹38 to ₹100 per article
48 Speed Post: ₹48 to ₹72 per article
The Department of Posts believes that establishing separate categories for documents and parcels will make it easier for customers to select the appropriate service and eliminate any confusion regarding charges.
