US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the airstrikes on ISIS targets. In his statement, he said that a military operation was launched against the Islamic State terrorist organisation in response to the deadly attack in Palmyra.

Hegseth wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “In response to the December 13 attack in Palmyra, central Syria, which killed two of our soldiers and one civilian, the US military has launched Operation Hawkeye Strike to destroy ISIS fighters, their infrastructure, and weapons sites in Syria.
