OCI Card Rules: The Indian government has introduced major, user-friendly updates to the process of obtaining Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards. Starting from April 1, 2026, these new rules are designed to make things easier and more digital for the diaspora. The biggest change is that the six-month stay requirement for foreign nationals applying from India has been removed.

6-month stay requirement removed

Previously, anyone applying for an OCI card from India needed to have lived there for at least 6 months to demonstrate ordinary residence. But with the new update, effective April 8, 2026, eligible foreign nationals can apply as soon as they arrive in India. No more waiting for six months, as long as they have a valid visa and all necessary documents.
