8th Pay Commission Update: Today, April 28th, might mark a significant day for central government employees and pensioners. The important three-day meeting of the 8th Pay Commission commenced today in the national capital, Delhi. As per a notice from Deputy Secretary Abhay N. Sahay, this meeting, which will take place from April 28th to 30th, will address key topics such as the fitment factor and minimum basic pay.

Will your salary go up?

Representatives from employee organizations and unions have been invited to participate in this meeting in Delhi. The discussions will focus on three primary issues:

Fitment Factor: Employee unions are advocating for an increase in the current fitment factor from 2.57 to 3.25 or higher.

Minimum Basic Pay: Should the fitment factor be approved, there will be a significant rise in the minimum basic salary.

Pension and Allowances: Recommendations regarding the review of DA and additional benefits for pensioners are also being formulated based on the memorandum.

The center had allotted 18 months for this task.

The government sanctioned the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission on November 3, 2025. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary stated that the Commission has 18 months to present its final report. Currently, the Commission is visiting various states to collect feedback from stakeholders. Following the drafting committee meeting on March 12, today’s three-day meeting is crucial as it may finalize the joint memorandum.

What are the employees’ demands?

Unions contend that the previous formula is outdated due to inflation and shifts in living standards over recent years. Employees anticipate a total salary increase of 20% to 30% once the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are put into effect.

After this meeting in Delhi, the Commission will start finalizing its draft report, which will then be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. Experts suggest that if the process continues at this rate, the new salary structure is very likely to be implemented within a few months.
