Monsoon Update: Severe cold and dense fog are causing immense hardship for people in the plains of India. Normal life is being disrupted due to the biting cold. Due to the cold weather, school holidays have been extended in several states until January 15th. Minimum temperatures are below 5 degrees Celsius in many states, resulting in extreme cold. Snowfall is also being observed in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Cold day conditions are expected in many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh for the next 2-3 days. Skymet has issued an alert for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Marathwada due to the formation of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall over the next two days.

Rain and Snowfall Expected in These States
The Meteorological Department has stated that a cold wave is likely to prevail in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, and North Interior Karnataka on January 11th. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on January 11th. The weather is likely to remain unstable in these states due to cold and snowfall.

Delhi Weather

In Delhi, the cold is exacerbating air pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was 297 at 7 AM, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. In the hilly regions, temperatures in Shimla have dropped below freezing. On Saturday, the temperature dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 17 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 5 degrees Celsius on January 11th and 12th. Cold and foggy conditions will persist during this period.

Cold Wave Expected in These Places

According to the Meteorological Department, cold wave and cold day conditions will prevail in many parts of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. In addition, minimum temperatures are expected to remain below normal in Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Several cities, including Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Jaisalmer, are expected to experience a severe cold wave.

In South India, a weather system originating from the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. The meteorological department also predicts cloudy skies and light rain in parts of Rayalaseema, South Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
