Preparations are in full swing at the station for PM Modi’s visit, with cleaning efforts, track maintenance, mock drills, and final touches being applied by the railway team.
The hydrogen train is currently stationed at the hydrogen depot next to the station, where it is being cleaned and will be adorned with flowers ahead of PM Modi’s arrival. The 89-km Jind-Sonipat route has been selected for the launch, where the hydrogen train will operate at a speed of 75 km/h. This event marks the debut of hydrogen-powered train technology, utilizing a fuel source other than electricity and coal.
The train will operate on green hydrogen
A hydrogen power facility has been established at Jind railway station to store the hydrogen fuel for this train. This facility will utilize electricity and water to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, resulting in what is referred to as green hydrogen. This hydrogen will then react with oxygen to produce electricity, which will drive the train’s wheels through fuel cells.
Claiming to be the world’s longest hydrogen train
One of the standout features of this train is that it will be the longest and most powerful hydrogen train globally. The train will consist of 10 rakes, with 8 coaches accommodating 682 passengers, and a total capacity of 2,600 passengers. In terms of power, there will be two generator cars, each with a capacity of 1,200 kW, generating electricity from hydrogen fuel to power the train.
Regarding the passenger experience, the fare for this train will be comparable to that of any local train or DEMU, with prices expected to range from Rs 5 to Rs 25. While PM Modi will officially launch this new train on July 17th, regular passengers will need to wait about one to one and a half months before they can board it.
When will the travel of common people start after the inauguration?
Ahead of PM Modi’s inauguration ceremony, Delhi Division DRM Pushpendra Tripathi also arrived at Jind Railway Station today to review the hydrogen train’s inaugural run. He stated that some necessary trials remain, and once completed, the train will be operational for general passengers within a month or a half.
Most importantly, this train produces no smoke or pollution from the fuel used; instead, only steam and heat are emitted. This makes it unique, as India aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2070, for which this technology could prove to be a milestone.
