How Much Memory and Storage Do You Really Need in a New Smartphone?

So you are getting a new phone, and you have one thing on your mind — how much RAM and memory do I select? Relax, something which we all fret about. RAM and memory are the two factors that determine how smooth your phone is going to be and how much content you can store inside it. Let us discuss it in very easy terms.

First, explain to us what RAM and storage are. RAM allows your phone to run applications smoothly. The more RAM, the easier it will be to multitask. Storage holds files, videos, photos, and apps. The more storage, the more space to place them.

Then explain to us how much is sufficient.

If you only have calls, WhatsApp, some YouTube or web surfing usage on your phone, then you are good with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. You will never have any problem whatsoever doing your usual day-to-day work. But do not expect too-smooth demanding app or game performance.

And if you are an Instagram scroll-er, app opener, Reel and YouTube watcher, and the odd casual gamer, then the 128GB storage and 6GB RAM is perfect for you. Your phone will be buttery smooth, and you will not clutter the space so readily.

But if you are gaming gaming in heavy games like BGMI or Call of Duty, video editing, or on work usage with your phone, then 8GB and above RAM and 256GB and above storage is what you should opt for. That will provide you with speed and additional storage to keep more larger files, videos, and apps.

And some other stuff is also good, such as UFS storage and LPDDR types of RAM. Like, for instance, UFS 2.2 or UFS 3.1 storage is more rapid compared to the older ones. LPDDR4X or LPDDR5 RAM is also good and enhances the phone speed.

Short answer: if you do not have an extremely tight budget, at least purchase 6GB RAM and 128GB storage so that your phone lasts longer and is still usable even after 2 or 3 years. If possible, purchase more.

Next time you buy a phone, then, first check the RAM and storage. Because that will tell you just how fast and future-proof your phone really is.
