Beware of AI Voice Scams: While AI technology has made many tasks easier, it has now become a new way for fraudsters. A copy of your voice can be created by recording just a few seconds. Therefore, be careful before sending money immediately on any emergency call, check and seek help from the police if needed.
Now, Artificial Intelligence has become a new weapon in the hands of fraudsters. With the help of which they can easily copy your voice in a few seconds and try to cheat you or your loved ones. From America to India, cases of this new type of fraud are coming to light where people get trapped in fake emergency by listening to the fake voice of their loved ones and lose their money.
How does voice theft happen with AI?
Nowadays everyone records their conversations and shares them on social media. According to a report by McAfee, fraudsters need only a three-second audio clip to imitate your voice. After this, they use AI tools to create an exact copy of your voice. Then they call people using this fake voice and scare them and extort money from them.
How Do the Fraudsters Trap You?
Fraudsters deceive the victim by impersonating a near and dear one—child, sibling, or close friend. They exert pressure on the victim, posing to be in extreme distress or trouble, thus, instilling fear in the heart of one who listens to them. In some cases, they even pose to be police officers, reporting to the victim that a near one has been implicated in a crime. They act on the spur of the moment to send money in a panic, and the scam is thus facilitated.
Cases Are Increasing in India Too
This type of fraud occurs not just overseas but is also occurring in India. Many people, especially older ones, have been fleeced after listening to what sounded like a family member in distress. The elderly tend to have problems in voice identification, thus contributing to the panic, which makes them send money without thinking twice.
How to avoid this new fraud?
If you ever get such an emergency call, do not panic. First of all, try to find out the truth by calling the person in whose name the call has come from another number. Secondly, voices created by AI often sound a little different and robotic. If you prolong the conversation a little, the disturbance in the voice can be detected. If you still get cheated, immediately file a complaint with the police.
