EPS Pension: Crucial news has emerged for employees in both the government and private sectors. The EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme) is a pension plan designed to provide support after retirement, ensuring that retirees do not have to make drastic changes to their lifestyles. Currently, the scheme offers a minimum pension of ₹1,000 and a maximum of ₹7,500. However, there has been long-standing talk about increasing these amounts, and the Central Government has now issued a statement regarding this matter.
The Central Government has not yet taken a decision to accept this demand or to increase the minimum pension. In response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje stated clearly that while the government is committed to providing better social security to EPFO members, it must also consider the pension fund’s financial stability and future liabilities.
Discussion on EPS in Parliament
The Monsoon Session of Parliament is currently underway, featuring discussions on various issues of public interest. During these proceedings, the matter of increasing the EPS pension amount for employees was also raised. When the issue was raised in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shobha Karandlaje responded that, while many stakeholders have demanded a pension hike, no decision has been made on the matter so far.
How the EPS Fund Operates
The Ministry of Labour informed Parliament that funds for the Employees’ Pension Fund come primarily from two sources: first, an 8.33% employer contribution based on the employee’s salary; and second, a 1.16% budgetary contribution from the Central Government on salaries up to ₹15,000. All pension payments and other benefits are disbursed from this fund. According to the government, the EPS fund undergoes an annual valuation to ensure its financial health remains robust.
Is a ₹1,000 Pension Sufficient?
The Member of Parliament raised the question of whether a monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 is sufficient for elderly employees to lead a dignified life in the current times. The government stated that it is providing a minimum monthly pension of ₹1,000 under the EPS-1995 scheme through budgetary support.
What were the demands of the organisations?
Various stakeholders, including trade unions and public representatives, have repeatedly demanded that the government raise the minimum PF pension from ₹1,000 to ₹7,500.
This is because pensioners feel that receiving a mere ₹1,000 as a pension offers them no real benefit; managing expenses with this amount amidst rising inflation is extremely difficult.
