EPFO Update: People often switch jobs to secure a higher salary and a better position. However, you may not be aware that changing jobs might also require changes to your PF account. Ultimately, it is up to the employee whether or not they wish to alter their PF account; they can choose to continue using the existing PF account linked to their UAN.
It is important to note that if you switch jobs and notice a PF account linked to your UAN that does not belong to you, you should not ignore it. An incorrect member ID can create confusion in PF records and lead to complications during future transfers or withdrawals. Fortunately, the EPFO provides an online facility to remove incorrectly linked member IDs.
First Steps
To identify an incorrect PF account, log in using your UAN and password. Navigate to the ‘Service Details’ or ‘Service History’ section to view all member IDs linked to your UAN. Compare details such as the company name, tenure of employment, and member ID against your actual employment records. If a company or PF member ID appears in the list that does not correspond to your actual employment, it may be considered an incorrect link. However, do not delink a PF account associated with a genuine past employer simply because you no longer work there.

How to Delink an Incorrect Member ID
Once an incorrect account is identified, you can choose to delink the specific Member ID. You will then be required to provide a reason for the delinking on the portal. For instance, you might select a reason indicating that, although a company had offered employment, you never actually worked there. Finally, you must accept the declaration and authenticate the request using an Aadhaar-based OTP. The OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your UAN, and the request will be processed once this step is completed.
What happens if the PF contribution has already been deposited?
It is worth noting that EPFO simplified this facility in April. Requests for ‘de-linking’ can now be made even in cases where an incorrect member ID is involved. Where the employer has already deposited the PF contribution, the process may require involvement from the employer or the EPFO office.
However, immediate de-linking is not possible in every case; member IDs associated with claims that have already been processed, settled, or are pending may be excluded from this facility under established rules. Additionally, limits on online requests apply to cases involving more than six contributions made against an incorrect member ID.
Documents required
If the process cannot be completed online, please keep documents such as your appointment letter, salary slips, PF settlement records, and records of communication with the employer in a safe place. The employer may request these from the employee if necessary. Employees should regularly check their PF history using their UAN and ensure that their PF records are linked to the correct employer and member ID.
