EPFO: Big news for EPFO members. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has released an important guideline for Provident Fund (PF) account holders. According to the new regulations, if a PF member gets married, any previous nomination made prior to the marriage will be rendered legally invalid immediately. Paragraph 44 of the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme specifies that it is essential for a member to submit a new e-nomination in their PF account following a change in marital status.
This change will affect the financial security of dependents. EPFO states that if a member fails to update their nomination after marriage, their family could encounter significant administrative and legal challenges when trying to access the accumulated funds in the event of an unfortunate incident or mishap. This rule applies not only to the PF amount but also to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI). It’s important to highlight that under the EDLI scheme, the family of the account holder is entitled to free life insurance coverage of up to Rs 7 lakh. Not updating the nomination could lead to delays in claiming this insurance amount.

Flexibility in Nomination Selection
The revised rules make it clear that when creating a new nomination after marriage, it is not necessary to nominate only the spouse. Members have the option to nominate other eligible family members—such as parents, spouse, or children—according to their preference. Additionally, multiple nominees can be appointed with a specified percentage of shares allocated among them.
No employer approval required: Change details from home
In keeping with the Digital India initiative, EPFO has streamlined this process to be entirely paperless and efficient. Members are not required to visit an office or seek any digital approval from their employer.
Members can easily log in to the EPFO’s Unified Member Portal using their UAN and password. Then, under the ‘Manage’ section, they can select the ‘e-Nomination’ option and input the new nominee’s Aadhaar, photo, and bank details. Finally, the process is completed by e-signing using the OTP received on the mobile number linked to the Aadhaar card. The organization has advised all account holders to promptly update their profile details to avoid any disputes.
