EPFO: Big alert for EPFO members. If you are employed in a company and your Provident Fund (PF) is deducted from your salary every month, this information is extremely important for you. Employers are required to deposit the PF money of employees into their accounts on time, for which they must submit the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) every month. This return provides detailed information about employees’ salaries and the contributions deposited in their PF accounts.
What is ECR, short for Electronic Challan cum Return?
ECR is essentially a digital report that every employer must upload on the EPFO portal every month. It contains detailed information of each employee subject to PF deductions, such as the employee’s name, UAN, salary for that month, and the deducted PF amount. Previously, this process required filling out paper forms like Form 5, 10, 12A, but ECR has streamlined this entire procedure. Now, once the data is uploaded, the challan is automatically generated, making the whole process digital and efficient.
Why is the deadline of the 15th essential?
According to EPFO rules, it is mandatory to deposit PF contributions and file ECR by the 15th of the following month for the month in which the salary is given. Following this rule, the last date for filing the salary and PF contributions for June 2026 has been set as July 15, 2026.
How to File ECR, Understand Step-by-Step?
1. Initially, ensure you have a complete record of salary and PF deductions ready.
2. Then log in to the EPFO Employer Portal with your Employer ID and password.
3. Verify the UAN and Aadhaar KYC of all employees.
4. Proceed to upload the file in the ECR section, and once validation is complete, the challan will be generated automatically.
5. Lastly, make the online payment via internet banking.
