New Horror Release on Amazon Prime Video: Are you also one of those people who love watching horror movies? If yes, then ‘Andhera’, recently released on Amazon Prime Video, is a new option for you. This psychological horror thriller stars Karanvir Malhotra and Prajakta Koli in the lead roles. Apart from this, actors like Priya Bapat, Surveen Chawla and Vatsal Seth are also seen in it. This 8-episode series tells the story of a medical student battling the shadow of an evil spirit. So let’s know whether this show will scare you or not.
Story: Does ‘Andhera’ really scare?
The story of the show revolves around a medical student named Jai (Karanvir Malhotra), who keeps having strange dreams and visions. In these visions, he sees a 24-year-old girl, Bani Barua, who falls from a hotel. Jai feels that he has a deep connection with Bani. To solve this mystery, he seeks to uncover the truth about ‘Andhera’, and during this time, he meets Rumi (Prajakta Koli). Rumi is a YouTuber, whose channel ‘Unseen Supernatural Club’ is based on paranormal events.
Jai and Rumi team up to solve the mystery of Bani’s death. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Officer Kalpana Kadam (Priya Bapat) also starts investigating this case. The story has many twists and turns. Now the question is, does Jai have any connection with Bani? Will Rumi and Jai together be able to find out the truth behind ‘Andhera’? To know the answers to all these questions, you will have to watch this series on Prime Video.
‘Andhera’ is written by Karmanya Ahuja, Karan Anshuman, Raghav Dar, Gaurav Desai, Akshat Ghildiyal and Chintan Sarad. But this horror series is very slow. The first four episodes seem very drawn out and boring. It seems as if the story is not moving forward at all.
Director Raghav Dar has attempted to make it exciting, but this effort was unsuccessful. Things like the sudden appearance of scary characters or the empty swing at night seem very old and predictable. Not only this, at many places in the series, you will get a glimpse of Netflix’s famous series ‘Stranger Things’. It seems as if the makers have tried to ‘copy’ rather than ‘inspire’. Despite having such a long list of actors, only 2-3 characters dominate the story; the rest are just for name’s sake.
Acting: Who was better?
Karanvir Malhotra has played his character in an average way. Despite being a depressed character, the writers have not given him much to do. Prajakta Koli’s character, Rumi, is not much different from her YouTube channel and ‘Mismatched’, which makes her acting seem somewhat lacking in newness.
Vatsal Seth has done a good job in the negative role, but his on-screen presence is very limited, which prevents him from leaving his mark. The relationship between Surveen Chawla and Priya Bapat also appears to be very weak. Amidst all this, if any actor has brought life to her character, then it is Priya Bapat. She has played the role of a fearless police officer very well.
If you watch horror films very rarely and are new to this genre, then ‘Andhera’ may scare you a little. However, if you are a horror fan, then this series is a mixed bag for you, as it often revisits familiar elements. The copying of ‘Stranger Things’ is too much. Any artist should understand the line between inspiration and copying.
In our opinion, ‘Andhera’ can be given only 2 stars, and that’s because the makers tried to do something new. But, unfortunately, they failed in it.
