Digi Yatra: A new initiative has been launched to ease the entry and boarding process at airports for Indian passengers travelling abroad. Now the trial of Digi Yatra facility has been started for international passengers as well. Currently, this facility will be available on selected international flights at 7 major airports of the country. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, this trial will continue till November and December 2026. Initially, only eligible Indian citizens holding e-passports will be able to use this facility. Apart from this, currently only passengers of selected international flights of Air India and IndiGo will get its benefit.
Based on passenger feedback during this trial, the government plans to roll out Digi Yatra on a larger scale by 2027. Therefore, if you’re considering traveling abroad soon, it’s important to find out which airports will provide this service, who is eligible to use it, and what the requirements are.
Digi Yatra trial starts at 7 airports
Currently, Digi Yatra is available for international travelers at seven airports across the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi, and Amritsar. This feature will be accessible at specific terminal entry points, security hold areas, and boarding gates. However, not all passengers on international flights will have immediate access to it.
Who is eligible for Digi Yatra?
This service, designed for international flights, is not available to every passenger at this moment. Certain criteria must be met.
– The passenger must be an Indian citizen.
– They must possess an e-passport.
– The passenger’s flight must be one of the selected international services where the Digi Yatra trial is active.
– The passenger needs to generate e-passport based verifiable credentials through the Digi Yatra app.
This indicates that merely downloading the Digi Yatra app is insufficient to access the service. You will also need to complete the required digital verification using your e-passport and the app.
How to set up a digital identity on the Digi Yatra app?
International travelers must establish digital credentials linked to their e-passport before utilizing Digi Yatra. The process consists of several steps.
1. Launch the Digi Yatra app on your smartphone.
2. Scan the MRZ (Machine-Readable Zone) of your e-passport.
3. Use your smartphone’s NFC feature to read the electronic chip in the passport.
4. Capture a selfie in the app to finish the identity verification process.
5. After verification, your digital credentials will be saved in the Digi Yatra wallet on your device.
