DA Hike Update: The wait for the 8th Pay Commission recommendations is nearing its end for central government employees and pensioners. Meanwhile, there is also anticipation regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hikes. Various calculations are underway, and analysts are making estimates for the DA hike based on past trends. Recent developments suggest that an announcement regarding the DA hike could be made soon. Notably, M.S. Venkatesan, General Secretary of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers, wrote to the Finance Department last week, requesting that the process for announcing the DA hike be initiated.

Rising Expectations for DA Hike
Following this, the expectations among employees and pensioners regarding the DA hike announcement have surged. Manjeet Singh Patel, President of the All India New Pension Scheme Employees Federation, indicated that the DA hike could be announced within a week. Meanwhile, a source from the All India Defence Employees Federation, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the announcement could be made at any time this week.

Regarding the specific date of the hike, the government has not yet finalised a decision; however, based on past patterns, it could announce the hike around Dussehra. While the government has frequently announced DA hikes around festive seasons in the past, there is no fixed tradition regarding the timing.

Last year, Dussehra fell on October 2, and the DA hike was announced on October 6. In 2024, Dussehra fell on October 12, and the DA hike was announced on October 21. With Dussehra falling on October 20 in 2026, the question arises whether the government might announce the DA hike before the festival this time. The answer to this will become clear only after the official announcement.

Delay beyond expectations in the previous half-year
The government had delayed the announcement longer than anticipated during the previous half-year. It was expected that the hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) would be announced in the first week of March, coinciding with Holi; however, the government made the announcement in the third week of April. That hike was 2 per cent, raising the Central Government allowance from 58 per cent to 60 per cent. Now, a 3 per cent hike in DA is being projected; if the increase happens, the Central Government allowance will rise to 63 percent.
