DA Hike 2026: Central government employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for the next Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) hike in 2026. The expected revision has become a major topic of discussion, as employees hope for additional financial relief ahead of the festive season. Attention is now focused on the potential Union Cabinet meeting on October 28, 2026, with expectations that the government could announce the long-awaited increase.
However, the Centre has not officially confirmed the date of the announcement or the final percentage increase. According to recent media reports, a 3% hike is expected, which could raise the DA rate from the existing 60% to 63% of basic pay. Until the government issues an official notification, the proposed increase remains an expectation rather than a confirmed decision.
What Is the Latest Update?
Dearness Allowance is an important component of the salary paid to central government employees. It is intended to help employees manage the impact of inflation and rising living costs. Dearness Relief serves a similar purpose for eligible central government pensioners.
The government generally revises DA and DR twice a year, with the changes linked to movements in the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). The two revision cycles normally relate to January and July.
The previous revision increased DA from 58% to 60% of basic pay, effective from January 1, 2026. The corresponding Dearness Relief rate for pensioners was also raised to 60%. Employees are now waiting for the next revision, which is due for the July 2026 cycle.
Will DA Increase from 60% to 63%?
According to current estimates, central government employees could receive a 3-percentage-point increase in DA. If the proposal is approved, the rate would rise from 60% to 63% of basic pay, with the revision potentially effective from July 1, 2026.
The anticipated increase is based on the inflation data used in the DA calculation. However, the final percentage will depend on the government’s decision and official notification.
Employees should therefore avoid treating the 63% rate as confirmed until the Centre announces the revised rates. The October 28 Cabinet meeting is being watched closely, but there is no guarantee that the DA hike will be announced or approved on that date. The Finance Ministry can also notify a revision separately, so the announcement does not necessarily have to follow a Cabinet meeting.
For example, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 30,000 could receive an additional Rs 900 per month in DA if the rate rises from 60% to 63%. An employee with a basic salary of Rs 50,000 could receive Rs 1,500 more per month. The actual change in take-home salary may differ depending on other salary components and applicable deductions. Certain allowances linked to DA may also be affected under the relevant rules.
What About Pensioners and Dearness Relief?
Central government pensioners are also awaiting the corresponding Dearness Relief revision. If the government approves a 3-percentage-point increase from 60% to 63%, eligible pensioners could receive additional monthly relief calculated on their applicable basic pension.
For instance, a pensioner with a basic pension of Rs 25,000 could receive Rs 750 more per month if DR rises by three percentage points. A pensioner with a basic pension of Rs 40,000 could receive an additional Rs 1,200 per month. These examples assume the proposed increase is approved and the same percentage-point change applies to the pensioner’s eligible basic pension. The actual amount will depend on the final government order and applicable pension rules.
Will Employees Receive DA Arrears from July 2026?
Another important question concerns arrears. If the government approves the revised DA rate with retrospective effect from July 1, 2026, eligible employees could receive arrears for the period between the effective date and implementation of the revised rate.
For example, if the hike is approved in October but made effective from July 1, the eligible difference for July onward could be payable as arrears. The exact amount and payment schedule would depend on the official order and the period covered.

Pensioners could similarly become eligible for DR arrears if the revision is approved retrospectively. However, the effective date, payment arrangements and any applicable conditions must be confirmed through the government’s notification.
