DA Hike: Big news for government employees. Central government employees and pensioners have been looking forward to receiving their dearness allowance (DA) for quite some time. The timing of when this long-awaited relief will arrive is still uncertain. A few states have already stepped up with impressive DA hikes, with Punjab leading the way. The Punjab government has boosted DA by eight percent for its state government employees and pensioners, with an official notification released on Wednesday.
Taking effect from September 1
The enhanced DA for Punjab government employees kicks in from September 1, and staff members will see the boosted amount reflected in their monthly paychecks in line with standard government rules. Pensioners will similarly enjoy the benefits of the higher DA under the applicable guidelines. A statement from the Chief Minister’s Office highlighted that this move demonstrates the state government’s dedication to supporting the welfare and financial wellbeing of its employees and pensioners. “The DA boost will give employees and pensioners extra financial breathing room as they deal with climbing living costs and pricier essential goods,” the statement noted.
This move comes after a recent conversation between employee union leaders and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The discussion covered several employment-related matters in depth, with special focus on the push for a dearness allowance increase. Mann let the union representatives know that their reasonable requests would be treated with care and that the government would take fitting action to support employees and pensioners. According to the statement, staying true to this promise, the government has now put out a formal notification giving the green light to the eight percent DA increase.
Announcement for 85,000 government employees
It should be noted that recently, the Punjab government announced that it would increase the DA by 18 percent to 60 percent for approximately 85,000 government employees recruited after July 17, 2020. This announcement is significant because employees recruited after July 17, 2020, were receiving salaries equivalent to the central pay scale, with a 42 percent dearness allowance.
This was significantly lower than the pay scale of employees recruited before July 2020, who are paid according to the Punjab Pay Commission. The government contends that there are two pay scales in Punjab, creating conflicts and confusion over differing interests. These include the Punjab Basic Pay Scale and the Central Basic Pay Scale (as per the Seventh Central Pay Commission).
