CGHS: Big news for government employees. If you are a central government employee, this information could be beneficial for you as the central government has recently modified the rules of the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) for its employees. Have the rules changed?
The government has eliminated the previous geographical constraints that restricted CGHS eligibility for central government employees based on their location of residence or posting. The previous limitations had caused challenges for employees residing or working outside the CGHS coverage area.
Under the updated rules, eligible employees in such situations can now choose to enroll in CGHS, subject to meeting certain criteria and paying the specified contribution. Once an employee selects this option, it cannot be reversed. Employees opting for CGHS must also declare that they or their eligible family members will not seek medical benefits under both CGHS and the Central Services (Medical Attendance) Rules, 1944. Employees residing or working in areas already covered by CGHS must continue to be covered by CGHS, and they are not allowed to seek benefits under the CS(MA) rules.

The government has emphasized that severe actions will be taken against any employee providing false or misleading information regarding medical benefits, including disciplinary measures and recovery of wrongfully obtained benefits.

– CGHS is a government healthcare program designed for current and retired central government employees and their eligible family members.
– It was initiated on July 1, 1954, in Delhi to provide medical care and simplify the reimbursement process for outpatient treatments.
– Over the years, CGHS has expanded to various cities outside Delhi, offering services through wellness centers, polyclinics, laboratories, and affiliated hospitals.
– Its coverage has extended to include eligible pensioners and other beneficiary categories.
– As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Annual Report for 2024-25, CGHS had expanded to 81 cities and served around 46.87 lakh beneficiaries.
