Kia Carens Clavis EV vs. Mahindra XEV 9S: The options available to electric car buyers have evolved significantly. If you’re looking for a 7-seater family EV, the Kia Carens Clavis EV and Mahindra XEV 9S are two prominent contenders. Both vehicles have been designed with distinct philosophies. Kia prioritised practicality and family comfort in the Clavis EV, while the Mahindra XEV 9S boasts a larger battery, a powerful motor, and an imposing, SUV-like road presence. The real question, then, is: which EV better suits your needs?

Both the Kia Carens Clavis EV and the Mahindra XEV 9S are 7-seater electric cars, but they differ in style. On one hand, Kia offers a practical family EV; on the other, Mahindra delivers an SUV experience with greater power and range.

Design

These two vehicles take completely different design paths. The XEV 9S features a blanked-off nose and large LED DRLs, giving it a distinct SUV look—almost like a futuristic variant of the XUV700. In contrast, the Carens Clavis EV sticks to a classic MPV style. Elements like a green number plate, a light bar above the grille, and a centrally located charging flap distinguish it from its petrol and diesel counterparts.

Cabin

The Mahindra XEV 9S features a dashboard layout similar to the XEV 9e, complete with a triple-screen setup and premium materials that give it a high-tech feel. In the middle row, the flat floor and generous width allow three people to sit comfortably, and the outboard seats even offer ventilation.

Accessing the third row, however, is somewhat challenging; only 40% of the seat slides forward, and once seated, passengers find their knees raised high. Consequently, the Clavis EV may not be the ideal choice for long journeys.

Features and Price

Regarding battery options, the XEV 9S offers three choices—59kWh, 70kWh, and 79kWh—while the Clavis EV comes with two options: 42kWh and 51.4kWh. Interestingly, the long-range 79kWh version of the XEV 9S starts at ₹21.95 lakh, which is nearly on par with the Clavis’s ₹21.99 lakh variant. At this price point, both vehicles share features such as six airbags, ESP, a panoramic sunroof, and a touchscreen infotainment system.

The gap widens at the top-end variants; the XEV 9S goes up to ₹29.45 lakh, whereas the Clavis EV tops out at ₹24.49 lakh.

Performance and Range

The XEV 9S features a 79kWh Blade LFP battery paired with a rear-wheel-drive motor that generates 286hp and 380Nm of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 7.54 seconds. In contrast, the Clavis EV’s motor, powered by a 51.4 kWh battery, delivers 171 hp and completes the 0-100 km/h run in 8.44 seconds.

The XEV 9S also leads in terms of range. Despite its heavier battery, it offers a real-world range of 477 km, whereas the lighter Clavis EV manages only 364 km. Regarding charging speed, the XEV 9S’s 175kW fast-charging support far surpasses the Clavis’s 42kW capability.
