PAN 2.0 Scam- Big news for PAN Card holders. The Indian government has issued a serious warning about a new phishing scam that falsely promises users an upgraded “PAN 2.0” card. According to a report, FraudThe scam, spread through emails with PAN 2.0 ID, is designed to steal sensitive personal and financial details from gullible citizens.
The messages often mimic official formats, use forged seals, fake contact details and language that triggers urgency to create a false sense of legitimacy. Meanwhile, PIB and Income Tax Department have busted a cybercriminal’s PAN 2.0 scam.
According to the fact check unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Income Tax Department, these emails are completely fake and have no connection with official government services. With cyber criminals increasingly targeting individuals during the tax-filing season, citizens are urged to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to these malicious attempts.
According to a report, this warning comes at a time when more and more citizens are paying taxes online and using digital services for financial transactions. Cybercriminals are taking advantage of the trust in government communications to target people. At a time when digital fraud is on the rise, awareness and caution are the strongest defenses.
What is PAN 2.0 scam?
According to a Bloomberg report, phishing emails are sent from suspicious email addresses such as [email protected] with subject lines such as: “Get your PAN 2.0 card.” These emails contain links that appear to come from government portals, but actually redirect users to fraudulent websites. This fake site asks for sensitive information such as PAN numbers, Aadhaar card information, bank account information, and other personal information. Once entered, this data can be used for identity theft, financial fraud, or unauthorized transactions. This deceptive tactic takes advantage of the official look of government communication to trick users into believing that it is legitimate.
PIB Fact Check on its official X handle has flagged these emails with an urgent warning. “Scam Alert!! Have you received any email asking you to click on a link to download your e-PAN card?… This email is #Fake,” PIB Fact Check wrote. Similarly, the Income Tax Department clarified that it never sends unsolicited messages asking for personal details or account numbers. It stressed that genuine PAN services are available only on official websites ending in .gov.in or .nic.in.
