School Summer Vacation: Big relief for school students and their parents. In view of the extreme heat in the state, the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council and the Secondary Education Department have taken a big and important decision to extend the summer vacation. According to the new government order, all primary and secondary schools will now remain closed until June 24 instead of June 15 and will reopen from June 25, 2026.
The summer vacation calendar has been revised on the orders of Additional Chief Secretary (Basic and Secondary Education) Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma. Education department officials believe that reopening schools from June 16th could have adverse effects on children’s health due to the severe heat wave and extreme temperatures that prevail in June. District magistrates (DMs) have often had to issue orders to close schools at their discretion, creating difficulties for the academic calendar and administrative arrangements. To address this confusion, the statewide holidays have now been extended until June 24th. The new summer vacation will be effective from May 20th to June 24th, 2026.
What are the rules for teachers and staff?
While schools will remain closed for students until June 24, the rules are slightly different for teachers, Shiksha Mitras, instructors, and other staff. Their holidays will only last until June 21. Beginning June 22, 2026, all teachers and non-teaching staff will be required to be present in school.
This is due to the fact that with schools reopening, students are expected to return on June 22, 23, and 24 to finalize preparations for the new academic session. This mainly involves creating a new timetable, organizing mid-day meal (MDM) arrangements, distributing new textbooks, and cleaning the school grounds. The department has made it clear that even with this adjustment, the required 220 days of study for each academic session will still be upheld.
Why are all schools reopening on June 21? All schools in Uttar Pradesh will open during the holidays on June 21st to celebrate International Yoga Day. On this day, all teachers, Shiksha Mitra students, instructors, and students will come together to practice yoga on school grounds. Students will also be invited to help ensure the successful organization of Yoga Day, after which teachers and students will celebrate this national event together.
As per the established timetable, the state’s council primary and upper primary schools reopened on Tuesday following the summer break. On the first day, as instructed by Basic Education Director Anil Bhushan Chaturvedi, the schools created a festive atmosphere. Teachers warmly greeted students with roli and tika. Additionally, children were served kheer as part of their mid-day meal on the first day. However, due to the heat, the department quickly reversed its decision and extended the holidays until June 24th for the safety of the children. Now, teachers will reach out to the parents of absent children and encourage them to ensure their children attend school regularly starting June 25th.
