Approximately 24 million people travel by train in India every day, the highest number in any other country. Despite approximately 19,000 trains operating under 19 zones, passengers often struggle to get both tickets and trains on time. Especially during winter, fog-induced train delays of up to 8-10 hours have become commonplace. Even after complaining, passengers receive no redress. But now, passengers have a legal and easy way to get a full refund for their tickets.

What are your rights?
Under the Railway Act, if a train is cancelled or delayed by more than 3 hours, passengers have the right to a full refund. The Railways have established a process for this refund, called TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt). Through this, passengers can receive a full refund without canceling their booking.
When can a TDR be filed?
A TDR can be filed only if the train is completely cancelled, delayed by more than 3 hours, the passenger is unable to find a seat, the wrong coach is allotted, or travel is impossible due to illness or death. This rule applies to both confirmed and Tatkal tickets.
Keep in mind before traveling
Once a TDR is filed, you cannot travel on that ticket. Therefore, file a TDR only if you have decided not to travel. Sometimes, passengers cancel their tickets themselves after a train cancellation, resulting in a reduction in the refund. In such cases, a TDR is the best option.
Process of filing a TDR
The process of filing a TDR is very simple. First, log in to the IRCTC website or mobile app. Then, go to the “Booked Ticket History” section and select the ticket for which you want to file a TDR. Click on the “File TDR” option and select the refund reason, such as train cancellation, train delay, etc. Submit the form.
How many days does it take to get your money back?
After filing a TDR, your request is verified by the Railway Department. Upon verification, the full ticket amount is returned to the same bank account used for booking the ticket within 7 to 10 working days.
Will you get a refund on Tatkal tickets?
If your Tatkal ticket is confirmed and you cancel it yourself, you won’t receive a refund. However, if the train is cancelled or delayed by more than 3 hours, or travel is impossible for any other reason, you can get a full refund by filing a TDR.

Why is TDR information important?
Passengers often make the mistake of canceling tickets in the event of a delayed or canceled train, resulting in a reduced refund. However, filing a TDR is a legal and safe process that can ensure a full refund. Therefore, if a train is delayed or cancelled, file a TDR directly.
