UPI: If you utilize UPI applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, it is essential to be informed about a significant update that has taken effect today. A new regulation stipulates that mobile numbers associated with bank accounts and deemed inactive for an extended period will be removed from the UPI system. This change will impact users whose bank accounts are connected to outdated or inactive numbers. If your bank account is linked to an old or deactivated number, you may encounter difficulties with UPI transactions.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced this measure to mitigate cyber fraud and technical issues. When a mobile number becomes inactive, telecom companies often reassign it to a different user, which heightens the risk of fraud for bank accounts linked to that old number. Consequently, the NPCI has mandated that banks and UPI applications identify and eliminate inactive mobile numbers from their systems on a weekly basis.

To prevent any disruptions in your transactions, please follow these steps:

1. Verify the mobile number associated with your bank account. If it is outdated or inactive, update it without delay.

2. Reach out to your telecom provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) to confirm that the number is still registered under your name.

3. If your number has been deactivated and reassigned, visit your bank to link a new number.

4. Update your mobile number and banking information in your UPI application (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm).

The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) will deactivate numbers that have remained inactive for an extended period starting April 1, 2025. If you have an old number linked to your bank account that has been dormant for a long time, it is advisable to link a new number to your bank account before this date. Failing to do so may result in difficulties when transacting via UPI. Therefore, it is recommended to complete this task promptly.
