The central government has launched the “Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana” to support the country’s traditional artisans and craftsmen. The scheme aims to provide recognition, training, and financial assistance to those who have been engaged in traditional crafts such as handicrafts, pottery, carpentry, goldsmithing, and blacksmithing for generations. Under the scheme, artisans will not only receive identity cards but also receive financial assistance for purchasing modern tools, a stipend during training, and loans at affordable interest rates.

The government says this will promote “vocal for local” and give India’s traditional crafts a new identity. The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana (PM Vishwakarma Yojana) is a central government scheme launched on September 17, 2023, to support traditional artisans and craftsmen to modernize their work.

Who are eligible for the scheme

The scheme is for people engaged in 13 traditional occupations, such as carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, goldsmiths, masons, barbers, washermen, tailors, fishermen, cobblers, sculptors, toymakers, handloom weavers, and more. Under the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, traditional artisans and craftsmen are being provided with several important benefits. First, they will be provided with a digital Vishwakarma identity card (ID) and certificate, which will identify them in government records.

Next, they will receive 5 to 15 days of skills training, including training on new tools and techniques. They will also receive a stipend of ₹500 per day during this training. Artisans will receive a one-time financial assistance of ₹15,000 to purchase tools and improve their work. Additionally, they will receive loans in two phases at a low interest rate (only 5%). Loans of up to ₹1 lakh are available in the first phase and up to ₹2 lakh in the second phase.

Under this scheme, they will also be provided assistance with services such as marketing, digital payments, branding, and promotion to better market their products. The government will also help them connect with e-commerce platforms, enabling them to expand their businesses digitally. Applicants must be Indian citizens, over 18 years of age, and be engaged in a traditional occupation (provide occupational proof). They must not be taking advantage of any other government self-employment scheme (such as PMEGP).
