The city has implemented stringent penalties to deter reckless driving, particularly in light of its heavy traffic and rising accident rates. Offenses such as driving under the influence, riding without a helmet, using a mobile phone while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt will attract substantial fines.
If you wish to protect your finances, it is crucial to adhere to traffic regulations, as violations can now result in fines reaching up to Rs 25,000. As of March 1, 2025, more severe penalties for significant traffic violations have been enacted, with fines increasing up to tenfold.
Amount of penalties
For drunk driving, the penalty has been raised to Rs 10,000 and/or six months of imprisonment. Repeat offenders may face fines of Rs 15,000 and imprisonment for up to two years, a stark increase from the previous fines of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500.
Using a mobile phone while driving will now result in a fine of Rs 5,000, compared to the earlier penalty of Rs 500.
Riding a motorcycle without a helmet will incur a fine of Rs 1,000, and your license may be suspended for three months. Similarly, failing to wear a seatbelt will also result in a fine of Rs 1,000.
The government has also raised fines for operating a vehicle without proper documentation.
