Tomato Price Hike: In the past few days, tomato prices have once again become a source of concern for consumers. Until a few weeks ago, tomatoes, which were readily available in every household kitchen, have now become increasingly expensive, forcing consumers to reckon with their prices. Sudden weather changes and heavy rains have disrupted tomato supplies across the country, directly impacting retail prices.

Rain and Weather Disrupt Supply Chain

Rain in major producing states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat has significantly damaged farmers’ crops. As a result, the number of tomato trucks arriving at major vegetable markets, such as Azadpur Mandi, has significantly decreased. This decrease in the number of trucks has led to a decrease in supply, leading to a sharp increase in retail prices.

Rise in Prices Due to Increased Demand During Wedding Season

Tomato consumption increases exponentially during wedding and festival seasons. This time, demand has increased, but prices have seen a sharp increase due to reduced supply. Many consumers are now purchasing tomatoes in smaller quantities than they need and are hoping the market will stabilise in the coming days.

Sharp Rise in Retail Prices

According to data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the average retail price of tomatoes across the country increased from Rs. 36 per kg to Rs. 46 per kg between October 19 and November 19. Chandigarh recorded a price increase of up to 112 percent, while Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh saw monthly increases of over 40 percent. In many cities, good quality tomatoes are selling for up to Rs. 80 per kg.

Demand Raises Inflation Concerns

Recently, a decline in the prices of essential food items like tomatoes, onions, and potatoes had brought retail inflation to a 0.25 percent level, the lowest level in many years. However, as rains disrupted the supply chain, inflation has started rising again. Experts believe that this will be clearly visible in consumers’ pockets in the coming weeks.

What will the market look like in the coming days?

If the weather doesn’t return to normal soon, it may take time for regular crop supplies to resume. Demand remains high during the wedding season, so prices are unlikely to fall immediately. The government is monitoring the situation and may intervene in the market if necessary.
