The 100-rupee note is worth lakhs

The serial number of this note, sold for ₹5.6 million, is reported to be HA 078400. These Hajj notes were specifically made for Indian pilgrims traveling to Gulf countries for the Hajj pilgrimage. At that time, a large number of pilgrims bought gold and brought it to India, fueling the illegal gold trade. To curb this, the RBI issued these special currency notes. These notes were not valid in India and could only be used in select Gulf countries.

It should be noted that circumstances changed over time. Kuwait introduced its own currency in 1961, and other Gulf countries gradually adopted their own currencies. Consequently, the circulation of Hajj notes was completely discontinued in the 1970s. Today, these notes have become extremely rare, leading currency collectors to spend lakhs of rupees to acquire them.

Learn the special features of the Hajj notes

Hajj notes were also distinct from regular Indian currency. The serial number of these notes always began with HA, making them easy to identify. Furthermore, their color and design were also different from regular Indian currency. These notes were accepted only in a select few countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.

Notes sold for high prices last year

This is not the first time old Indian notes have fetched high prices at auction. In May 2024, two old 10 rupee notes were sold for lakhs of rupees at an auction in London. One of these notes was sold for approximately 6.90 lakh rupees, and the other for approximately 5.80 lakh rupees. These notes were issued on May 25, 1918, and date back to the final stages of World War I. These notes were present on the British ship SS Shirala, which was sunk by a German U-boat on July 2, 1918. Due to their association with this historical event, the value of these notes is considered very high in today’s time.
